Diwali
Festivals form an integral part of every country. India is rightly known as land of colors and festivals. Festivals add colors, enthusiasm and harmony to life and are celebrated with great zeal all over. Indians all over the world celebrate diwali with great joy.
Diwali is known as festival of lights not only because lamps are lit in the houses but also to commemorate the victory of good over evil, victory of light over dark and victory of truth over false. It is the day when hopes are flourished into happenings. It is believed that Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after conquering Lanka on the day of Diwali. Lord Rama’s father Dashrath had asked him to go to the wild forests for fourteen years. During this, the king of Lanka, abducted Seeta, Lord Rama’s wife. Lord Rama was along with his brother Laxman in the forests and he met the monkey king Sugriva.
Sugriva sent all the monkeys all over the world to find Seeta and finally Lord Hanuman found Seeta in the kingdom of Ravana at Lanka. Hanuman burnt Lanka and came back to inform Lord Rama. Lord Rama then prepared a large army of monkeys and invaded Lanka. After defeating Ravana, he came back after fourteen years.
Diwali which is also known as Deepavali is celebrated by people of all caste and creed. Candles are lightened in every home and people also clean their homes. People meet their friends and families and share moments of joys with them. Diwali makes warmth of relations more intense. The elder person in the family buys gifts for younger ones. Women in the family cook various dishes peculiar to Diwali such as Gujiya.
On this day Lord Ganesha is worshipped with Goddess Laxmi. Everyone wishes for prosperity and happiness for others on this occasion. All private and government organizations, schools, colleges and other financial institutions declare public holidays on the occasion of diwali. Diwali has social significance as it encourages personal meetings with remote friends and family.
